Launched just under a decade ago in 2010, the Mahindra Thar has been one of the most iconic offroading SUVs coming from India. A short and boxy metal body with a bare-bones design on the inside and out paired with a diesel engine capable of smashing through every terrain is what garnered a lot of attention for the SUV.The Mahindra Thar had received a mild update way back in 2015 and now Mahindra is soon pulling the plug on the Thar as it does not meet the upcoming crash-test regulations in India that will come into effect from October 1, 2019. But before doing that, Mahindra is going give the Thar, arguably the company's most iconic vehicle, a proper send off. Mahindra will give the Thar, a special edition which will most likely be the final avatar of the Thar that we have all come to know. The final version of the Thar will have ABS, a feature no other Thar have gotten in the past. The final Thar will also get decals on the exterior and a set of alloy wheels as part of standard equipment that will help differentiate it from the standard Thar. The SUV will also sport a slightly different interior package. Performance, however, comes from the same 2.5-liter CRDe diesel motor as the standard Thar. While the next generation Thar will be bigger and more powerful, it will certainly not be as brawny and bare-bones as the people have come to love. The next-gen Thar will meet the upcoming safety norms and BS-VI regulations in India when it launches in 2020 and will be based on Mahindra’s Gen3 Chassis that is derived from the likes of the TUV300. The next generation Mahindra Thar will also get airbags, finally. However, if the current gen Thar with a more traditional design is what you are looking for, the special edition Thar just might be the last chance for a no-nonsense offroader, and the best choice because of the inclusion of ABS.
